Zielona Góra is a small town in Poland whose name translates as "Green Mountain. It is one of the capitals of the Lubuskie Province, but in its daily life there is no hint of the capital's hustle and bustle. It is unhurried and measured, which is what attracts tourists who want to relax and take a break from the metropolis.
The city stretches to the west of Poland in the valley of the river Oder, where it flows over a line of hills. Geographically, Zielona Góra belongs to the sub-region of the southern Baltic Sea. The hill next to which it is located is called Wała Zielona Góra and is a natural monument. On the map of Poland you can see that the nearest major cities to Zielona Góra are Poznań (155 km) and Wroclaw (185 km). From the capital it is 450 km away.
The first Slavic settlement in this part of the country appeared in the X. But the first mention of Zielona Góra dates back to the XIII. The settlement grew rapidly, so it soon attracted the attention of neighboring Prussia. When the population exceeded 1000 people, Prince Henry IV granted it the status of a town. Since then, German settlers began to flock here.
In the 16th century Zelena Góra and the entire Duchy of Hloh became part of Bohemia. In the XVIII century, power went to Prussia. Only at the end of World War II, the city rejoined Poland.
Now Zielona Góra is a quiet provincial town of just over 278 square kilometers with a population of about 140,000 (2017).
