The Saratov-Engels automobile bridge is one of the most significant landmarks of the region and quite prominent among others. The Saratov Bridge connects the right and left banks of the Volga River, where the cities of Saratov and Engels are located, respectively. Construction of the bridge began in 1958 with the approval of its design and lasted until July 1965, the date of its grand opening. On the same day, July 11, 1965, the longest bridge in Europe at that time was opened to traffic, a unique event in the 70s of the twentieth century. The authors of the project were V.M. Iodzevich, V.N. Ivanov, B.M. Nadezhin - outstanding engineers and architects of the country. The construction of the Saratov Bridge took about seven years and more than two hundred and fifty million rubles. In addition to the four lanes of traffic on the bridge were organized two pedestrian sidewalks and a line for trolley buses. However, today it is impossible to see the trolleybus network - it was liquidated in 2004 and it was decided not to restore it anymore.
During its existence the Saratov Bridge has been reconstructed several times, during which significant details of its structure were changed, the pavement and railing were completely replaced, fixed lighting supports and a number of other details were replaced. The peculiarity of Saratov Automobile Bridge is the fact that on its different sections its height and width of the passages change, so, from the Saratov side the spans are higher, closer to Engels they are lowered and narrowed. This unusual fact is explained by the fact that large ships come to Saratov, and it is necessary to have a sufficient height of the bridge to allow them to enter the port unobstructed.
The Saratov Automobile Bridge is one of the notable sights of the city. It offers amazing views of Saratov and traces all the most prominent tourist sites in the city - Cosmonauts' Embankment, River Station, Elena Tower and others. During the construction of such a large-scale hydraulic structure, filming of the movie "The Bridge Is Being Built" took place on its territory, and six months before the bridge started operating, Yuri Gagarin visited it.
