Hamburg International Airport is considered to be the oldest airport in operation in Germany. It was opened in January 1911. In the 1990s, it was planned to move further north of Hamburg, but later the project was abandoned in favor of reconstruction: new infrastructure and passenger service buildings, a hotel and transport accesses were built. There was also a city commuter rail line. Since November 10, 2016, Hamburg Airport has been named after Helmut Schmidt.
The airport has two asphalt runways. One is 3,250 meters long and the other is 3,666 meters. Both runways as well as taxiways and platforms are ready for all aircrafts, including the Airbus A380.
