Playa del Inglés is a popular tourist resort in Gran Canaria, whose name in Spanish means "beach of the English". It is part of the municipality of San Bartolome de Tirajana. The permanent population of the resort is about 7.5 thousand people.
There are several versions of the origin of the name Playa del Inglés. According to one of them, in the early 20th century, these pristine lands were taken over by members of the English bohemia. However, recently it was established that in fact, the bohemia was French, but local residents have taken it for English, as they knew neither one nor the other language, but the name has already firmly attached to the area. Today Playa del Inglés along with the neighboring resorts of San Agustín, Maspalomas and Sonnenland make up a huge tourist area to the south of which is the famous Maspalomas Dunes Nature Reserve and the island's natural attraction.
Back in the middle of the 20th century the Playa del Inglés area was practically untouched, but as early as the 1960s began the rapid development of the tourist industry, which completely changed the resort. During those years, most of the houses were built with the same look, but recently many of them have been restored in such a way that they turned out to be very nicely integrated into the surrounding landscape. There are several shopping centers within the resort, the largest of which are Yumbo and Kasbah.
