Saratov Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet is one of the oldest in the Volga region and in Russia, it was founded in 1803. Nowadays the theater of opera and ballet has a rich, original repertoire. "The golden fund" consists of classics, constantly renewed, preserving the modern artistic form - "Prince Igor" by A. Borodin, "Eugene Onegin", "The Queen of Spades" by P. Tchaikovsky, Mermaid by Dargomyzhsky, Sadko by Rimsky-Korsakov, Oresteia by Taneyev, Rienzi by Wagner, Un ballo in maschera, Rigoletto, La Traviata, Troubadour by Verdi.
Opera masterpieces by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (The Magic Flute, Le nozze di Figaro), Giuseppe Puccini (Tosca, Madama Butterfly), Giuseppe Rossini (The Sevillean Civet) and Giuseppe Verdi (The Sevillean Civet) are always on stage. Rossini ("The Barber of Seville") and classics of ballet art - "Swan Lake", "The Nutcracker", "The Sleeping Beauty" by Tchaikovsky; "Giselle" by А.Adam, "Don Quixote" by L.Minkus, "Raymonda" by A.Glazunov.
Many performances of the theater were highly appreciated. The production of Shostakovich's Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk District in 1998 was awarded a special prize of the "Golden Mask" National Theatre Prize, given to People's Artist of Russia Y.L. Kochnev "For masterly and inspired performance of Shostakovich's music". And in 2016 Y.L. Kochnev was awarded the "Golden Mask" for the best conductor's work in S. Prokofiev's ballet "Steel Skok".
