Emmerich am Rhein is a city in Germany, in North Rhine-Westphalia. Subordinate to the administrative district of Dusseldorf. Is part of the Kleve district. Population is 29.8 thousand (2009); in 2000. - In 2000 the city had 28.9 thousand. The city covers an area of 80.11 sq.km. The city is divided into 8 districts.
According to ESBE, Emmerich am Rhein owes its origin to its cathedral. Count Otto von Geldern, under whose patronage the chapter was placed in 1233, enclosed the town of Emmerich in 1247 with a city wall and gave it the status of a town.
Since 1402 the city belonged to the Duchy of Cleves, since 1407 it was a part of the Association of German free cities of Hansa. The time of the city's greatest prosperity falls on the 15th century, when it is believed to have had up to forty thousand inhabitants.
In 1599 Emmerich am Rhein was besieged by the Spaniards under Mendoza.
In 1609 Emmerich am Rhein, together with the Duchy of Kleve, became part of the Duchy of Brandenburg.
In 1614, the town was taken over by Moritz of Orange (Nassau), who significantly strengthened its fortifications.
In 1672, the city was taken by Louis XIV, who ordered to destroy all fortifications of the city.
