Olbia is the main city of Northern Sardinia and the administrative center of the province of the same name. The city is located in the north-eastern part of the island. Nearby is the airport, named after the popular resort of Costa Smeralda. This airport mainly receives flights from cities in Italy. Olbia's patron saint is the city's first bishop, Saint Simplicius. The official holiday in his honor is celebrated on May 15.
The history of this settlement goes back thousands of years. Before Christ, the area was inhabited by the Nurag tribe. Then the area was conquered by the Phoenicians. They founded the first port in Olbia. The Romans, the Pune, the Carthaginians, and even the Greeks visited it. The city was named after the Greek word Olbios, meaning "happy". However, the Sardinians themselves call it Terranova - "new land". Thanks to its convenient geographical position, Olbia has always attracted many travelers and has been one of the richest cities in Sardinia. Proof of this are the ruins of ancient necropolises, aqueducts, Romanesque thermae and other public buildings.
Today, Olbia is particularly attractive to tourists due to its close proximity to the resorts of Porto Cervo and Porto Rotondo, which are part of the Emerald Coast Costa Smeralda. This coast is the most elite and glamorous part of Sardinia. You can reach it from Olbia in just 20-25 minutes by car. Other interesting places for tourists are 30 km from the city in San Teodoro and Budoni. These places are famous for their picturesque beaches and cleanliness of nature.
The beaches of Olbia have an unparalleled beauty. There are unique rocky landscapes and sandy shores. Sometimes there are beaches with coarse sand with flecks of shells. This, for example, Murta Maria is a popular place for surfers. The fine white sand with crystal clear water can be found on the beach Punta Corallina. And, of course, for those who love luxury and fashionable holidays nearby is the beach of Porto Rotondo.
