Nicaragua is the largest country in Central America. Its eastern coast is washed by the waters of the Caribbean Sea and the western coast by the Pacific Ocean. The area is 130 thousand square kilometers. The population is 6.1 million. The capital is Managua. Nicaragua is an independent state since 1838.
Nicaragua still has some of the historical characteristics of the colonization of its territory. At one time the western part of the country (near Lake Nicaragua) was occupied by the Spanish and the eastern part (Mosquito Coast with its unhealthy climate and dense forests) by the British. Today over 70% of Nicaragua's population is Spanish-speaking mestizos, the Ladinos, who live in the western part of the country. Most people in the east speak a dialect of English. It is also home to Nicaragua's largest and most isolated Amerindian population, the Miskito.
