Kaniv is a city of regional subordination in the Cherkasy region of Ukraine, the administrative center of the Kaniv district (not part of it). It was founded in the XI century by the Kiev Prince Yaroslav the Wise.It is located on the Dnieper River. There is a Kanevskaya hydroelectric power station, which is part of "Ukrhydroenergo" and the Kanevskaya reservoir formed by it.
