Pantelleria, formerly Cossira, is an Italian island in the Sicilian straits in the Mediterranean Sea, 100 km south-west of Sicily, 70 km east of the coast of Africa (Tunisia). Pantelleria is part of the commune of the same name, which belongs to the province of Trapani, Sicily.

The island's patrons are venerated by the Blessed Virgin Mary, as well as Saints Fortunatus of Kasea and Cristina, celebrated on October 16.
The island is of volcanic origin, with an area of 83 km². The highest point is Montagne Grande, 836 m above sea level. Hot mineral springs and fumaroles testify to volcanic activity, as do two calderas. Another caldera formed a small lake called the Venere Mirror (Italian: Specchio di Venere), up to 12 meters deep, fed by rain and underground springs.

The island has fertile soils but lacks fresh water, which only comes in the form of rain.
