Tikhvin is the largest and one of the oldest cities in the Leningrad region, which attracts many travelers with its provincial charm and unique architectural sights.
Its foundation is associated with a very unusual event: in the summer of 1383, on the bank of the Tikhvinka River, on which the modern city stands, and at that time there was a small Prechistensky Tikhvin pogost, was found the Tikhvin icon of Our Lady, which got there by miracle and later became known for its healing abilities.
Already in the XVI century the Great Monastery of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was built on this site, around which the city itself was later founded. Despite the fact that the city has been destroyed many times in fires, as well as during military operations of the Great Patriotic War, it has managed to keep its history, ancient architecture and unique look, which gradually took shape over 5 centuries.
