La Coruna, officially known as A Coruña, is a large port city in the Galicia region of northwestern Spain, located on the Atlantic coast, 159 kilometers north of Vigo and 70 km from Santiago de Compostela. The population is 246,028 (2011).
The area around the current city of La Coruña was a settlement that existed before the arrival of the Romans in the 2nd century B.C. when it was an important commercial port.
In the second century B.C., the Romans built the lighthouse that has survived to this day and which is now called the Tower of Hercules.
After the fall of the Roman Empire the port lost its importance and in the 7-8 centuries the city was no more than a small fishing village.
In 991 the construction of defensive military structures began here, but the official date of the founding of the city is considered to be 1208, which is when King Alfonso IX founded the city of Crunia, which actively grew and developed.
Today La Coruña is the richest region of Galicia, a major busy port and a popular tourist center.
Tourists are attracted to the city by its sandy beaches, well-developed infrastructure, good shopping and interesting historical sites.
