Webcam Munster. Principalmarkt, Old Town
Munster (Munster) is a city located in the lands of North Rhine-Westphalia, in western Germany.
In 794 Munster arose as a monastery founded by the Frisian missionary Ludger to help Charlemagne's campaign to gain control of the Saxons. In 805 Munster was made a diocese, and in 1170 received the right to be called a city. In 1648, a peace treaty was signed in the town hall, which marked the end of the Thirty Years' War.
Today Münster is a fast-growing city, with a population of about 300,000, it is the administrative center and is widely known for its university.
Prinzipalmarkt (Prinzipalmarkt) is a historic street in Münster. The name of the street can be translated as "Main Market".
The appearance of the Prinzipalmarkt is defined by the unique building gables with arcades along the entire length and on both sides of the street. Their uniqueness lies in the fact that no two gables are the same throughout the street, while they are all designed in the same architectural vein. The most famous buildings on the Principalmarkt are the Münster Town Hall, St. Lambert's Church and the Town Hall Tower.
Since the Middle Ages the ground floors of the buildings have been used as retail outlets. It was used in this way until 2005, when almost all sales were moved to the new Münster Arkaden shopping mall. However, because of fears that the decline of commerce would lead to the "extinction" of the historic part of the city, as happened, for example, in Oberhausen after the opening of the shopping center CentrO., it was decided to return small stores and cafes to the arcades.
