Wernigerode is part of the district of Saxony-Anhalt. The town is located in close proximity to the Harz mountain range, now a national park.

In what is now Vernigerode, the first settlement appeared in the ninth century. At that time the forests were actively deforested. According to the information taken from the chronicles, the city began to exist in 938.
The first official mentioning of the city. It is associated with the start of construction of the fortress - the predecessor of the modern city castle. The construction of the fortification began by order of Count Adlbert, after he founded his residence in Vernigerode in 1121.
The settlement developed until 1229, when the local counts were able to confer upon it the right to call it a town. To this end, they raised all available connections and acquaintances to raise the prestige of Vernigerode.
In 1872 a railroad line leading from the town to Halberstadt was laid. This was the impetus for the industrial and economic development of Wernigerode.
Wernigerode town hall is among the most famous and significant architectural monuments of modern Germany. In 1277 the building was an entertainment venue for feasts and concerts of itinerant artists.
Later, in the middle of the XV century, the building was demolished. At the end of the same century, Andreas Sprengel built a one-storey half-timbered house on the existing stone foundation. In the 16th century, the roof was added and the facade was completed.
Of particular interest are the 33 wooden figures placed on the front and side of the building. These wooden pieces are in the form of saints, clowns, yard boys and servants. On weekends the town hall offers exciting and informative guided tours for tourists.
