Webcam Kostroma. Susaninskaya Square online in real time

Susaninskaya Square is considered to be the main central square of Kostroma. It is a full-fledged architectural complex, which began to be built at the end of the XVIII century.
The regular plan of Kostroma originally defined the square's name as Ekaterinoslavskaya square. Earlier this place had been a town settlement, and then the New City Kremlin. At first the Susaninskaya square was designed as a semicircle, but its construction produced a "faceted" configuration. The square was paved in 1823, and 12 years later Nicholas I ordered it to be renamed Susaninskaya.

A year after the events of 1917 the monument to Ivan Susanin was destroyed, and the square was renamed Revolution Square. Seven years later, the chapel of Alexander Nevsky was also demolished. A playground for sports, then a park. And only in 1967 a new monument, devoted to the heroic peasant, was built on this place. Its "Susanin" name the square got back in 1992. And a few years ago serious reconstruction works were conducted there. Lawns were created, sidewalks were laid, and arbors were installed. There is now a temporary sign in the place where the monument originally stood.

The city municipality now uses the square for celebrations and festivities.

The central part of the square is occupied by a monument dedicated to Ivan Susanin and Tsar Mikhail Fedorovich. A square was later built around the monument. After that the area was paved with cobblestones and almost entirely built up. In the north there were buildings of hotels, fire hose cabin, guardroom and others. In the center of Susaninskaya square there were Big Flour Rows and the Gostiny Dvor. And from the south you can see the Chapel of Alexander Nevsky.

The square around the monument was laid out and fenced with a cast-iron fence. It was arranged in such a way that from it you could easily get to the guest house. Here were planted linden trees, brought from Holland, and 12 firs. In official documents the square was called "New", but people used to call it "Botnikovsky". The reason is that the town governor Gennady Botnikov donated money for its creation.
The sculpture, devoted to the famous Ivan Susanin, was erected in the early 1850s. The monument was created so that people would not forget the heroic peasant's deed during the Time of Troubles.

The sculpture was located exactly in the heart of the main city square. After the revolution the sculpture was destroyed.

After 50 years a new monument of white limestone was created by sculptor Nikita Lavinsky. It was opened in the fall of 1967. The monument is a figure of a peasant dressed in clothes with long flounces. He stands on a pedestal in the form of a cylinder. Ivan Susanin looks in the direction of the great river Volga.

The fire observation tower of Kostroma is the central architectural monument of the 19th century, a real symbol of the city. The fire observation tower adorns the main Susanin square and is known as the main sight of the town. Of the current towers only the Eiffel and the Leaning Tower of Pisa are higher than it.

Today fire-house is one of five buildings which are a part of the complex of Kostroma State Historical-Architectural and Art Museum-Reserve. The building of fire watchtower is the location of the excursion and tourist department of the museum. The fireplace is protected by UNESCO and is also recognized as a national treasure.
One of the main attractions of Kostroma is also a stunning building of the former Hauptwah, located in the heart of the city on Susaninskaya Square. The building was erected in the early nineteenth century and was remarkable for its graceful exterior, made in the empire style.
