Masurian Lakes (Polish: Mazury; also Great Masurian Lakes) are a large group of lakes in northeastern Poland, until 1945 in the territory of Prussia. The total area is 310 km².
The term Masurian Lakes is commonly used to describe the topography of northeastern Poland and the term Masurian Lakes is used to describe the hydrography of the region. The lakes are situated in the center of the Masurian Highlands, the topography of which was formed during the glacial period during the melting and shifting of ice masses, therefore the lake basins are of glacio-marine origin and are collectively called the Masurian Lake District.
Due to continuous wetting and a large amount of precipitation brought by Baltic and Atlantic cyclones, the lakes have plenty of water and are rather deep (up to 40 metres deep), they form a chain of basins connected by canals (ElblÄ…g Canal). The lakes flow mainly to the Vistula River basin in Poland and Pregolya (via Lava and Angrapa) - the central water artery of the Kaliningrad Oblast of the Russian Federation.
