Baishan, a prefecture-level city in Jilin Province, is located on the west side of Mount Changbai in Jilin Province, across the Yalu River from Huishan City in North Korea. Sixty percent of the Changbai Mountain Nature Reserve is located in Baishan City, and its area also includes scenic areas such as the Sunggua Baishan River Reservoir and the Yalu Yunfeng River Reservoir.
In 1902, the Qing imperial government established Linjiang County in today's Baishan region. During the Manchu Guo period, Linjiang County was under the jurisdiction of Tonghua. In March 1959, the Jilin provincial government transformed Linjiang County into a county-level city and renamed it Hongjiang City, which is still under the jurisdiction of Tonghua Prefecture.
In 1985, Hongjiang City became a prefecture-level city, governing three districts and three counties, including Fusong, Jinyui, and Changbaishan. The city was renamed Baishan in April 1994 with the approval of the State Council.
