Lake Balaton, referred to by Hungarians as the "Hungarian sea," is the largest freshwater lake in Europe. Balaton really resembles a sea, and its immense size, yellowish-green water color and unique microclimate.

There are many legends and legends associated with the origin of the lake. The most beautiful one tells of a girl who sits in an invisible church at the bottom of the lake and cries. Her tears fill the waters of the lake, and as long as she cries, there will always be water in Balaton. Another legend says that long ago, in the old days, meadows grew where the lake is now. But one day a plowman stumbled upon a heavy stone in the meadow. He moved it, and from under the stone a spring gushed out, which flooded the entire surrounding valley. Thus Lake Balaton was formed.
Balaton is in the western part of Hungary, on the Middle Danube Plain. The distance from Budapest to the resort of Balatonfured is about 130 km, and the nearest resort to Budapest is Balatonkeneshe just an hour away by highway. The area of the lake is just under 600 square meters, and the shoreline is 236 km long. The bottom of the lake is sandy, yellowish-green color gives the water the plankton it contains. The swimming season on Balaton lasts quite a long time - from spring to mid-autumn. During the summer months, the water temperature in the lake ranges from +22 ° C to +28 ° C. Winter on Balaton is mild, but the water is almost always frozen in the winter months. The shores of the lake are very different from each other. In the southern part of the gently and sandy descent into the water, a smooth entrance, shallow water near the shores. Beaches stretch along the entire coast - from the village of Balatonberenya to Balatonlelle, which is a swimming pool with water attractions.
This part of the coast is ideal for families with small children and for those who are not very good swimmers. The northern shore, on the other hand, is characterized by steep, precipitous shores and sharp depths. Here in 30-50 meters from the shore the depth can greatly exceed the height of a man.
Resorts located in the northern part can be recommended to lovers of active recreation and skilled swimmers. The east coast (Balatonalmadi) is characterized by the sunniest weather, here the greatest number of sunny days a year.
