Kondopoga is a town in the Republic of Karelia of the Russian Federation. Administrative center of Kondopoga district, forming Kondopoga urban settlement.
The third most populous city in the Republic.
The city is located on the shore of Kondopoga Bay on Lake Onega, in the depths of the bay, a few northeast of the mouth of the river Suna. From the north of Kondopoga is a lake Nigozero, from which the city through the canal Kondopoga HPP goes to Lake Onega.
The distance from Petrozavodsk is 54 km on the road, or 46 km on a straight line on the map.
Kondopoga traces its history from the second half of the XVI century. The city's name in Karelian means "bear's corner". Since XVIII century, high-quality marble was mined here, which decorated the buildings of luxurious palaces of St. Petersburg. Today, Kondopoga is an important industrial center, whose pulp and paper mill produces one-third of Russia's newsprint.
