Den-Helder Online Camera. Port and Quay
In the province of North Holland lies Den Helder, capital of the municipality of the same name. The municipality consists of three communities. Den Helder is the northernmost urban settlement on the entire coast of North Holland. Transport between the city and Texel Island is provided by ferry.
Several centuries ago the main town in the area was Hösdöinen. While Helder was just a nearby farmstead. But soon, thanks to its important strategic location at the northern tip of the peninsula, the small, inconspicuous village was transformed into a strong defensive fortification at the entrance to the Soiderse.
Den Helder's life is connected with the sea. The unique position of the city on the shores of the strait, on the border of the outer North Sea and the inner Wadden Sea predetermined the fate of the port city.
Since the late 18th century, the city was a naval base. In the 20s of the 19th century, a North Holland Canal was dug from the city area to the capital. Den Helder became the country's main naval base in 1947. To the historical and architectural sights of the city include the ancient Fort Keikdoyne.
