The city of Itajai is located in the state of Santa Catarina. It is part of the Vali do Itajai mesoregion. It is part of the economic and statistical micro-region of Itajai. The population is 163,218 as of 2007. It occupies an area of 289 square kilometers. The population density is 581.1 persons/square km.
Although the city was founded on June 15, 1860, colonization of Itajai began as early as 1658. The first governor of the region was Joao Diaz Arzão, who in 1658 was given control of the land across the Itajai-Mirim River. In 1750, settlers from Portugal from Madeira and the Azores settled in this region. In 1823 the settlement was given the status of a township, and in 1833 it became a district center. At the end of the nineteenth century, a large number of German and Italian immigrants chose this region as their place of settlement.
Initially the inhabitants of the town were engaged in fishing and agriculture. Over time, other activities began to flourish in Itajai. Today, the city is home to the main port of the state of Santa Catarina, the port of Itajai, and is the largest exporter of meat products in Brazil.
At the same time, developed trade, services, tourism and industry make Itajai one of the cities with the most diverse sources of income. Itajai is a rich and vibrant city that provides its residents with a high quality of life.
Located 98 km north of Florianopolis, the capital of the state of Santa Catarina, Itajai is the third largest container port in Brazil.
The port of Itajai has four berths, a convenient 740-meter dock with 10 meters of draft, presenting the possibility of serving three cargo carriers in parallel. The port has 15,000 m2 of covered storage and 38,000 m2 of container storage.
Responsible for 80% of Santa Catarina exports and 4% of national exports. The main products transported are: frozen chickens and meat, wood and furniture, tiles and parquet, motors and parts, paper, tobacco, apples, textiles and automotive products (buses, tractors, among others). The quality of the service provided and the infrastructure of the port made it possible to obtain the ISO 9001 certification in 2000. The first port certification in Brazil. The port operates under the management of the Prefecture of the Municipality of Itajai.
