Saratov is a large city located on the banks of the Volga River. Locals often refer to their city as the "capital of the Volga region.
Saratov is located on the right bank of the Volga River, 389 kilometers from Volgograd and 858 southeast of Moscow. It is a regional center. Its population is about 850 thousand people. The area it occupies is 394 square kilometers.
From references in historical records, it is clear that the town was founded in 1590 in the area between Samara and Tsaritsyn. It was designed as a fortified guard town and a point of passage on a vast trade route, located on the site of a former city of the Golden Horde. It took its name from the mountain on which it was situated, the "yellow mountain", which means "sary tau" in Tatar. The founders are considered to be boyar Fyodor Turov and Prince Grigory Zasekin, who acted by decree of Tsar Fyodor Ivanovich. By the XVII century Saratov turns into a big fortress with a garrison of archers, with a port for ships and becomes the main city, which trades fish and salt. In the 18th century it was given the title of a provincial city.
During the Great Patriotic War, due to its industrial development, the settlement was an important element in the production of military equipment: in a day produced up to 12 fighter planes.
Today it is a beautiful developing city with modern industrial enterprises, cultural institutions and architectural monuments.
