Norilsk is a city in the north of Krasnoyarsk Krai, in the south of the Taimyr Peninsula, 90 km east of the Yenisei River. One of the most polluted cities in the world.
Norilsk is beyond the Arctic Circle, territorially located in the Taimyr (Dolgano-Nenets) District of the Krasnoyarsk Territory, administratively the city of regional subordination. In 2004, two satellite towns (Talnakh, Kaierkan), and Snezhnogorsk settlement were annexed to Norilsk, and the United Municipal Entity "Norilsk" was given the status of an urban district.
Theater Square was named "Theater Square" in the 1980s, after the building of the Drama Theater, and from 1962 up to that time was called Dzerzhinsky Square.
The square has always been a favorite place for festivities: in summer, there was traditionally a fair, and in winter there was an ice rink and a Christmas tree. Construction of the theater began only in April 1983: with a solemn meeting and a memorial medal under the first pile. The construction was forced, but the theater could not go ahead: first they wanted to open it by the golden anniversary of Novolipetsk Metallurgical Combine in 1985, then by November 7, 1986. There was even a calendar: "There is still... until the Drama Theater is commissioned...". As a result, the first performance in the new theater was played only in January 1987.
