One part of the Bahamian archipelago, Grand Bahama, is home to Freeport, a free trade zone. From here to the coast of North America is a distance of approximately 160 kilometers.
In the XVIII century in these places were organized moorings of pirate ships.
Markets sprang up here to sell loot and enterprising traders bought slaves cheaply. After piracy was eradicated, the islands fell into decline, which lasted until the mid-20th century. In 1955, the Bahamian government granted a financier from Virginia, W. Groves, 200 square kilometers of wasteland and marshland. A town was built there and was named Freeport. Nowadays, more than 27 thousand people live here.
Tourism along with commerce is a source of revenue for the city's budget, annually attracting over a million tourists.
