Engels (called Pokrovsk until 1932) is located in Saratov Oblast. In this subject of the Russian Federation, it is considered the second largest in terms of population. The area of the city is 121.06 km². as of 2014, the total number of inhabitants is about 217700. It is the capital of the Engels municipal district. In the past, it was the capital of the Autonomous Republic of the Volga Germans.

In 1590-1674 years there was a fortress city Soratof. In 1747 in its place appeared Pokrovskaya Sloboda. This event was connected with the fact that there were plans to start salt mining on Lake Elton. When the railroad came to the settlement at the end of the 19th century, it became the largest market in the Trans-Volga region. Salt, grain, timber, oil, Asian products and building materials were traded there. The sloboda also developed in general terms.
In 1914 it became the city of Pokrovsk, and in the early 1930s it was named Engels. Between 1922 and 1941, it was the center of the Volga Germans ASSR.
In 1965, Engels was connected to Saratov by an automobile bridge.
