The city of Kansk stands on the Kan River, a right tributary of the Yenisei, in the middle of fairly flat, but picturesque forest-steppe. The first Kansk stockaded town was built in 1628, 43 km below the modern city. In 1636 the stockaded town was moved to its present place.
Permanent population in Kansk was not until 1717, when a few Cossack families were sent here from Krasnoyarsk. Development of the city strongly helped built in the second half of the XVIII century, the Siberian trakt. Soon Kansk built a stone cathedral, an honor that not every Siberian city was awarded. Industry is born, there is a vibrant cultural life: for example, theater and cinema appeared in the city before the revolution.
Old Kansk is located on the left (south) bank of the Kan River. The center of the city is Korostelyov Square, from which 500 meters to the railway station. The most interesting old buildings are on Krasnopartizanskaya and Kaitymskaya streets, which run parallel to the railroad north of the central square. The city also extends beyond the river, to the right bank, where Soviet-era apartment buildings are located.
Korostelev Square is the historical and cultural center of Kansk, a favorite vacation spot for citizens.
