The city of Petrozavodsk is the old capital of the Republic of Karelia. The city is located on the high shore of Lake Onega. Its length along the lake is 22 kilometers. The distance from Moscow is equal to 1000 kilometers. The city is cut through by narrow rivers: Lososinka, Neglinka, Tomica and Selgskaya, in addition it is surrounded by forests, buried in verdure and includes large green parks and forest belts. 63 Petrozavodsk ranks third in terms of population. To date, it is home to 271 thousand people, representing more than 50 nationalities, most of which are represented by the Russians and Karelians.
The city is divided into several neighborhoods: Barany Bereg, Vyginavolok, Zheleznodorozhny, Kukkovka, Klyuchevaya, Oktyabrsky, North Industrial Zone, Silicate Plant, Solomennoye. The city's coat of arms appeared in 1991. Petrozavodsk appeared thanks to Peter the Great, as well as under the influence of historical events of the 18th century. At that time Russia was fighting for access to the Baltic Sea, society was being rebuilt in a European manner, the industrial and agricultural production rapidly developed. At the order of the emperor at the mouth of the Lososinka river the Petrovsky factory was founded.
