In the place where Biysk stands today, about a million years ago there was a site of ancient man, and in the III century BC there was the Great Silk Road. On February 29, 1708 the Siberian Prikaz (office) of Kuznetsk fortress received an order to build a military fortification in the southern part of Kuznetsk uyezd: "On the Biya and Katun rivers in a decent place for collecting the yasashnoy treasury and for the settlement of peasants to build a fortress with any fortresses". It was executed, and the date of birth of the future city, built near the confluence of Biya and Katun, was June 18, 1709.
January 9 Square has been filled up with houses since 1956. The square was broken with tenderness of good hearts and decorated.
