Jasna Góra (Jasna Góra Monastery) was founded in the 14th century and is one of the spiritual centers of Poland. Since the 15th century the monastery has attracted numerous pilgrims who want to worship valuable relics - the medieval icon of the Black Madonna.
In the 17th century the monastery complex was fortified by ramparts, fragments of which can still be seen here. The monastery has the highest church tower in Poland, at the top of which there are 519 steps.
The Black Madonna is kept in a small chapel from the 14th century. According to tradition, the icon must be approached silently on your knees. The chapel's altar walls are covered with Renaissance and Mannerist frescoes, and the 17th-century main altar is made of dark ebony decorated with glittering silver ornaments.
