Tikhvin is a city in the Leningrad Region, located on the Tikhvinka River, 215 kilometers east of St. Petersburg.

The area of the settlement is 25.4 square kilometers, population 58,000 people.
The first mention of the settlement on the site of the modern Tikhvin is dated 1383.
At the beginning of the 16th century Tikhvin Pogost was a major trade and craft center.
In 1515, for the money of Prince Vasily III the stone Assumption Cathedral was built, which has survived to this day.

In 1560 at the command of Tsar Ivan IV on the bank of Tikhvinka founded the Uspensky monastery.
At the beginning of the 17th century Tikhvin Posad was captured and plundered by Swedish and Polish invaders.
In 1764 Tikhvinsky Posad was separated from the monastic administration.

In 1773 the settlement was transformed into the district town of Tikhvin, Novgorod province.
In 1811 was put into operation Tikhvin water system, on which the ships from St. Petersburg went to Nizhny Novgorod.
In 1918 the city became part of the newly formed Cherepovets province.
Since 1930 Tikhvin was included in the Leningrad region.

From November to December 1941 the town was occupied by the Nazis.
In July 1945 the settlement received the status of the city of regional subordination.
In the postwar years began a large-scale reconstruction of the dilapidated Tikhvin. At this time were built new apartment buildings and social and cultural facilities.
In 1974 the city was awarded the Order of the Great Patriotic War, First Class.

In January 2006 was established Tikhvin urban settlement with its center in Tikhvin.
In 2010, by decree of the President of the Russian Federation Tikhvin was awarded the honorary title "City of Military Glory.
