"Volzhsky - the city of my destiny" - this inscription on Lenin Square is seen by thousands of residents and guests of the city. After all, in fact, this place is unique. It is one of the greenest corners of Russia, and the most beautiful in the Volgograd region.
Northeast of the hero-city, on the opposite bank of the Volga River is a quiet corner. Its foundation is associated with the construction of the Stalingrad hydroelectric power plant in 1950-1961. Today, this hydroelectric power plant is the largest in the European part of Russia.
Since the 14th century archeologists have recorded the appearance of man on this coast. There are signs of residence of the Golden Horde tribes here. Their exact number is not established, they were located along the Akhtuba River. But on the territory of modern constructions many times were found items of household items of this period. Archaeologists can say with certainty that this area was actively used and important trade routes passed through it.
In 1951, not far from the construction site of the Stalingrad hydroelectric power station, the first houses were built. They housed construction workers, engineers, and power engineers who were working to build the dam. The number of those houses was growing, and the number of people living there was also increasing. The small village quickly grew. A school was opened there, a hospital was constructed, and a bakery was built. Each year more and more people came to this place to earn money, and new houses were built to accommodate them. As a result, in 1954 the settlement was declared a city. At that time it had about 30 thousand people. Now not only houses were built, but also small factories, hospitals and schools.
Since its formation, the town has become one of the "greenest" in the region. The project was designed in such a way that there was plenty of space for parks and public gardens. An irrigation system was created on all the streets, and trees were grown.
In 2004, Volzhsky took first place in the competition "The most well-appointed city in Russia" among cities with a population of up to 500 thousand people. And almost every year in this competition receives diplomas for the development of individual sectors of the economy.
