Bremerhaven is a city in northwestern Germany, part of the state of Bremen together with Bremen. At the same time, the two cities are separated from each other by the territory of the federal state of Lower Saxony. The town is located on the left (eastern) bank of the Weser River, in the marshy area surrounding its estuary.
Settlements on the territory of present-day Bremerhaven arose many centuries ago, but the city itself was founded in 1827.
