Vologda 800th Anniversary Bridge is a vehicular and pedestrian bridge across the Vologda River. The bridge connects Predtechenskaya Street and Prokatova Street. Upstream is the Red Bridge.
In 1959-1961 an engineer from the Moscow Institute "Giprokommundortrans" Lubvin built a five-span reinforced concrete cantilever-beam bridge. The bridge was built by the Bridge Construction Trust #809 of the Bridge Construction Trust #6 of the Ministry of Transport Construction. The bridge was opened for traffic on November 16, 1961.
The scheme of the bridge was 8.66 + 32.0 + 64.0 + 32.0 + 8.66 m. The bridge was 12.9 m wide, including two 1.9 m sidewalks. The middle three spans were beam-concrete with suspended box-like three-cell section spans of monolithic reinforced concrete; the outer spans (8.66 m long) were split-beam.
Decorating the structure commemorative cast-iron plaques cast on site. Stair exits from the bridge to the embankments of the right and left banks of the Vologda River were arranged for pedestrians.
In 1977, the wooden piles of the abutments were replaced by reinforced concrete ones. Because of errors in design and construction, the deflection of the channel span occurred. In 1961 it was 25 cm, during the inspection in 1998 - 41 cm. In 1998 according to the design of JSC "Institute Giprostroymost - Saint Petersburg" the bridge construction department No. 61 strengthened the overhang areas by installing tensioned reinforcement and similarly reinforced the broken tower No. 4.
In 2003 the reconstruction of the bridge was started, which included the dismantling of the reinforced concrete superstructure and replacing it with steel one. The general contractor was Mostootryad No. 61. The dismantling of the old bridge was performed by OOO NPP SK MOST. The works were performed in two stages. On November 1, 2005 the first phase of the new bridge was completed and opened, and on October 21, 2006 the second phase was opened.
The bridge has three metal spans; the spans are of reinforced-concrete beam and uncut system. In the cross section the span consists of four main beams of the curvilinear outline, united by longitudinal and transverse braces. The scheme of the bridge: 49.0 + 73.5 + 49.0 m. The total length of the bridge is 220 m, width - 20.5 m (including two sidewalks of 2.25 m).
The bridge is designed for vehicular and pedestrian traffic. The sidewalks are separated from the roadway by a high barrier fence. The roadway includes 4 lanes for vehicular traffic. The railings are metal without bollards.
