Krakow is a city in southern Poland, located on the Vistula River at the foot of the Carpathian Mountains, the administrative center of the Lesser Poland Voivodeship. It is the historical capital of the Polish kingdom and one of the largest cultural centers of the country. Krakow is the most beautiful city in Poland, and its main pearl is the historic center, which preserved its original medieval layout and many architectural monuments, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city was once surrounded by fortress walls, of which now remains only a small section at the Florian Gate.
Krakow is steeped in history, and its streets and squares have been colourful throughout the Middle Ages. Its landmark is the Wawel Hill with its royal castle, remembering the heyday of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and of paramount importance to the Polish nation.
Krakow is also home to several other iconic landmarks: the medieval Main Market Square (one of the largest market squares in Europe) with the Gothic Church of the Virgin Mary, which is considered one of the most important religious buildings in Poland, the Jagiellonian University - the oldest educational institution in the country, the Jewish quarter Kazimierz and many old churches.
