Sydney is Australia's largest and oldest city and the capital of the Australian state of New South Wales.
Located on the Pacific Ocean in the southeastern part of the Australian continent, the city covers 12,144 square kilometres and is home to more than 5 million people. Sydney is the first colonial European settlement in Australia.
It was founded in 1788 by England's Royal Navy Admiral Arthur Phillip and was named by the colonists after Lord Sydney, then Minister to the British colonies. The city has a subtropical oceanic climate with moderately hot summers and warm winters, with an average winter temperature of +11°C in July and an average temperature of +21°C in January. Precipitation here falls evenly throughout the year, and the average annual rainfall is about 1217 mm.
Sydney's main attractions are the Harbour Bridge, the Sydney Opera House and the many beautiful sandy beaches along the city's rugged coastline with its many bays, coves and islands.
