The city of Volzhsky is one of the largest cities in Volgograd Region, as well as a major industrial center of the Lower Volga region with a population of 314.4 thousand people.
The city is located on the bank of the Akhtuba River, 20 km from Volgograd. According to the results of the All-Russian competition "The most well-appointed city of Russia", held in 2004, Volzhsky was awarded the title of the greenest city among cities with a population of up to 500,000 people.
The place, where now stands Volzhsky, was inhabited back in the 14th century: then the territory of the future city had settlements of the Golden Horde. The Slavs began to settle on the Volga land only in the 15th century, before the appearance of Tsaritsyn. Later in the 17th century the village Bezrodnoye, also known as Verkhnyaya Akhtuba, which stretched from the modern village of Rabochy to Loginov Stadium: the rest, up to the river port, was occupied by households of villagers engaged in agriculture, "grew" on the site of the present Volga.
Construction of Volzhsky is inextricably linked with the construction of the Volzhskaya hydroelectric power plant: it was the creation of hydroelectric power plant that triggered the construction of Volzhsky. Construction of the future city was carried out by "Stalingradhydrostroy" company, the head of which was F.G. Loginov, who later became the founder of Volzhsky. Construction company was engaged not only in the construction of houses, but also industrial plants and cultural buildings, in particular Palace of Culture.
In January 1951, the pit was dug under the construction of the first house - at the end of the year the future city was equipped with another 8 such houses. Volzhsky was registered in 1952 as a settlement: at that time it had no more than 10,000 residents, most of whom were builders of the hydroelectric plant with their families. But two years later, the city had grown so much that the Presidium of the RSFSR Supreme Soviet decided to give Volzhsky the status of a city. The event took place on June 22, 1954 - this date is considered to be the birth date of Volzhsky.
