Webcam Ulyanovsk. Sobornaya Square in real time
Sobornaya Square is the main square of the city of Ulyanovsk. The square houses the building of the governor's administration and the regional government. Adjacent to the square are: "Leninskie Gorki" park, the building of the Regional Philharmonic Society (now the House of Music), Vladimir Garden, building of the Ulyanovsk regional clinical hospital for war veterans, "Sovetskaya" hotel, Novy Venets Boulevard, Plekhanov and Kuznetsov streets.
Cathedral Square appeared in Simbirsk in 1648, simultaneously with the founding of the city and was the center of the city kremlin. Square of the wooden fortress included nine towers placed at the corners and sides. Inside the fortress there were: an Orthodox church, the sovereign's court, clerks' office, prison, powder and salt cellars.
At the beginning of XVIII century the city lost its military and strategic importance. On the territory of the Kremlin, the walls of which were completely dismantled in the middle of the XVIII century, was designed an oval Sobornaya Square, was located within the "chopped" city and became the center of the new architectural and planning solution of Simbirsk.
In 1918 Sobornaya square was renamed into 1st of May Square.
In 1936 the Cathedral Square was demolished.
On April 22, 1940 (planned to be installed in 1937) on the square was opened a monument to Lenin, the sculptor M.G.Manizer, and the square itself was renamed into Lenin Square. Monument to Lenin is a symbol of Ulyanovsk.
In 1959 on Lenin Square was built the building of the Regional Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, now the Government House.
With the construction in 1970 of the hotel "Sovetskaya" square took a modern look.
