Trebinje is located on the river Trebisnica, 24 kilometers from Dubrovnik in Croatia. It is located in the south of Republika Srpska.
Within the old part of Trebinje is a fortress built during the Ottoman rule. Its construction began in 1706 on the initiative of Asman Pasha. In the first phase of construction, a 7-meter fortress wall was built, which surrounded a large plot of land on all sides. Then appeared the artillery fortifications and a few buildings.
In 1715, the construction of the moat began. The plan was to dig it along the walls, creating an additional protection on the way to the fortress from all sides. After 7 years, the ditch was finished. The ditch was filled with water from the Trebishnitsa River. But after three centuries, the ditch was filled up. The moat is now being re-carved, with water running into it, using pumps.
At first, there were few structures in the interior of the fortress walls. Later Osman-aga built a residence and several administrative buildings. Then a small mosque for the garrison appeared. With time another, but more capacious one was built, and later a clock tower was built.
Subsequently, the citizens, formerly living on the left bank of Trebishnitsa, moved closer to the fortress walls. New quarters were founded there over time. A market was built along the western wall and it is still operating. On the south side of the fortress walls, another gate was built.
Now there is a two-story building above the west gate to the old part of the city. But previously there was a tower in its place. After the fortress lost its former military significance, it was removed. In 1887, a building was built above the gate, the first floor of which housed several small stores.
Between World Wars I and II, the building above the west gate housed a souvenir shop for Kasim Wijen. He is believed to have been the originator of the local tourist business. The shop is still in operation today.
The city is attractive with its ancient architectural constructions, built in various historical periods.
In 2010, the city was allocated funds to restore the southern fortress gate. In the past they consisted of 2 low arches. They were so low that a rider had to dismount from his horse, take it under the bridles and go through the town that way. Today's gate has two side arches for pedestrians and one main arch for vehicles.
Hrupela Barracks appeared during the Austro-Hungarian period in 1887-1888. It occupied an elevated area, from which it had a good view of the county. The structure included a U-shaped building and two towers. It was used by the Germans during World War II.
The barracks also continued to serve its purpose in the peacetime, being on the books of the Yugoslav military. After its collapse, the barracks was used by commercial firms for their needs.
Many religious buildings are located in Trebinje, such as the Hercegovacka Gracanica Monastery, the Cathedral Church of the Holy Transfiguration, Osman Pasha Mosque and the Catholic Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary.
