The history of Gabrovo is in fact the history of the Bulgarian crafts. In the 19th century, there were 26 craftsmen's workshops - blacksmiths, shoemakers, jewelers, skinners, weavers, oilers, tanners, potters and many others. Gabrovo goods were in demand far beyond Bulgaria. Traders from all over Europe came here and waited for orders to be fulfilled.
Just as it was a century ago, the industry, especially the machine industry, is actively developing in Gabrovo. During the 2008 economic crisis, Gabrovo managed to remain relatively stable compared to other Bulgarian cities and is now gradually regaining its economic power.
The traditional leading economic branches that shape the Gabrovo industry are mechanical engineering, electronics, production of tools, plastic products, textile, shoe making, cosmetics and others.
Today Gabrovo boasts a rich cultural program. The city hosts a festival of humor, a festival of comedy plays, an annual carnival, an exhibition of craftsmen and many others.
