Canberra Webcam. Burleigh Griffin Lake
Australia is a country that is impossible not to fall in love with, and its capital Canberra is a city that surprises and delights every tourist who comes here. One of the striking sights of this place is Lake Burleigh-Griffin, which strikes not only with its beauty, but mainly because it was created not by natural, but artificial way.
It is accepted to keep an account of the history of Lake Burleigh-Griffin since 1908, when it was decided to award the city of Canberra the status of a capital city. Many places had to be changed, thereby transforming the overall appearance of the country. The authorities announced a competition, the winner of which was Walter Burleigh Griffin. It was this man who began to transform the capital. The architect's project provided for the creation of a huge body of water in the very center of the city, including several pools. Despite the fact that the authorities did not immediately approve Griffin's project, and the planned work was carried out for several years, Burleigh-Griffin Lake was finally completed in 1960.
A tremendous amount of work had to be done by experts to conserve the soil, install special trap data and drainage devices. Later, a monument to James Cook appeared in the heart of Lake Burleigh-Griffin, in the form of a fountain with a globe on which the route of this famous traveler was marked.
On October 17, 1964, half a century later, the lake was officially opened to the public and was named after its architect, who planned this Australian curiosity to detail. Years later, the King's Avenue Bridge and the Commonwealth Avenue Bridge appeared over the lake, and a road leading to the Scrivener Dam was built.
Lake Burleigh-Griffin can now safely be considered the center of the city. A huge number of beautiful buildings of great national value have been erected around the perimeter of this place, including the National Gallery, the National Museum, the National Library, the Australian National University, and the House of Parliament of Australia.
In addition, the area of the lake has become a place for a large number of entertainment for all tastes. Boat rides, fishing tournaments and sailing tournaments are held here.
