Vitosha National Park is located in Bulgaria, on the southern outskirts of the capital Sofia. Thanks to the mountain peak Vitosha, locals and tourists have a unique opportunity to escape from the hectic rhythm of the city in a few minutes and immerse themselves in the atmosphere of majestic nature, the contemplation of which is breathtaking.
Vitosha Nature Park covers an area of 27 079 hectares. It is the first Natural Park in Bulgaria and on the Balkan Peninsula. The Vitosha Mountain has the shape of an enormous dome and it is 19 km long and 17 km wide. The highest point is Cherni Vrah peak (2290 m). In addition, there are a dozen other peaks higher than 2000 meters in the reserve.
This protected region is a habitat for many species of flora and fauna, including rare ones. The flora of Vitosha Park includes 500 species of freshwater algae, 805 species of mushrooms, over 360 species of mosses and lichens and 1500 species of higher plants.
Depending on the season, you can meet here more than 200 species of birds. Among the large mammals are the fallow deer, red deer, bear and wolf.
