The town of Sandanski is located in the southwest of Blagoevgrad region and is the administrative center of the district of the same name. It is located 54 km from Blagoevgrad. Until 1949 it was called Sveti Vrach, then it was renamed after the famous Bulgarian revolutionary Yane Sandanski.
In the distant past on the site of the modern city was a Thracian settlement called Medius. Later, the locals were squeezed by the Romans. In some places of the city and now conducted archaeological research. During excavations specialists find different artifacts, as well as the remains of former buildings.
There are balneological centers in the city, where the basis of treatment is mineral water from local springs. Here heal diseases of the bronchi and lungs, a number of non-tuberculosis and degenerative diseases.
Several methods of balneotherapy are applied in the resorts, such as kinesitherapy, mud treatment, underwater massage. Also practiced breathing exercises, different types of physiotherapy and a number of other health-improving procedures.
A popular place to relax is the city park, where grow tall pines, sprawling pomegranates, low figs, evergreen thuas, shady willows, mighty cedars, dublestye plane trees. Along the alleys grow rose bushes of several varieties with red, maroon, yellow, lilac, and scarlet inflorescences.
Outside the city in the mountains, there is a men's monastery, founded in the 13th century. It, like other similar monasteries in mountain Bulgaria, often served as a refuge for insurgent units in the past.
