Ragusa is a city in southern Italy, located on the island of Sicily. It is considered one of the gems of the Val di Noto and is striking for its late Baroque architecture.
Ragusa, with its ancient history, is one of the most vibrant cities of Sicily and as if it has two souls. After the old city was destroyed by an earthquake in 1693, its inhabitants were divided into two camps.
The rich citizens and nobility decided to stay in Ible (the historical name of the city) and rebuilt the old town and erected the magnificent Cathedral of San Giorgio. The poorer townspeople on the plateau above decided to build a new town, topped by the equally beautiful Cathedral of San Giovanni. Now Ragusa consists of two parts: the old Ibla is now called the Lower Town and the western part is called the Upper Town.
