Kostomuksha is a small town in Karelia, located on the shore of Lake Kontokkiyarvi, 35 km from the Russian-Finnish border, 363 km from Petrozavodsk. The area of the settlement is 4 square kilometers.
In 1866 there were about 27 households and more than 160 people in the settlement. In 1917 the population of the village has grown to 300 people, who belonged to the Karelian and Finnish nationalities.
During the Great Patriotic War, the village was completely burned by the German invaders.
In 1967, on the site of the modern town began designing the mining and processing plant. In the 1970s, the construction of the settlement at the new iron ore deposit began.
In 1973 it was decided to build jointly with Finland mining and processing plant.
In November 1977 by the decree of the Government of Karelia the settlement was transformed into an urban-type settlement.
In 1982 the Kostomuksha Mining and Processing Combine was put into operation and in two years it reached its full capacity.
In April 1983 by decision of the government of the country the settlement received the status of a city and was named Kostomuksha.
In the late 1980s the following villages were included in Kostomuksha: Voknavolok, Ladvozero, Pongaguba, Sudnozero, Tolloreka.
