Astrakhan, the administrative center of Astrakhan Oblast, is a border region. It borders Kazakhstan to the east, Kalmykia to the west, the Caspian Sea to the south, and Volgograd Oblast to the north.
The city is located in the delta of the Volga River in its upper part, so Astrakhan spreads out on 11 islands.
October Square, one of the main squares of Astrakhan, is located near the west and north-west walls of the Astrakhan Kremlin, near Admiralteiskaya and Nikolskaya Streets and Turgenev Street. It stands on the border of the historic districts of Kos and White City.
Until 1973 it was called Koltso.
