Webcam Perm. Real-time panorama of the city
Perm is a city in the Urals region, the administrative center of Perm Krai. It stands on the bank of the large river Kama, below the mouth of the Chusovaya River. Perm stretches along the Kama River for 65 km and is the fourth largest city in Russia (after Moscow, St. Petersburg and Volgograd) in terms of area (800 square km). Its population is 1.05 million people. From 2004 to 2012, the population fell below 1 million inhabitants.
The name of the city is pronounced with a soft "r". This contradicts the rules of the Russian language, but so was established historically. Thanks to this peculiarity, locals can easily distinguish visitors who are not aware of this peculiarity. The word "Perm" was first mentioned in the Tale of Bygone Years in 1113. It is believed that it came from the Finnish-Karelian words "perya maa" - back (far) land. Until the 18th century the toponym was used to denote certain areas (Perm Velikaya, Perm Vychegodskaya), where the Komi people lived.
Perm is a pleasant city with friendly people and developed culture. In the recent past, they wanted to turn Perm into the cultural capital of Europe. After the change of government, the initiative was curtailed. Nevertheless, Perm remains the city of the Urals with the richest cultural life, and many interesting festivals take place here.
