Located at the confluence of the Adda River into the lake, Colico has a population of about 7,200 and a surface area of 35.3 square kilometers. Colico is an important transport hub - from here you can reach Milan (by train or car) or the cities of Como and Lecco (by ferry and boat). It is also an important hub to get to Milan (by train or car) or to Como and Lecco (by ferry or boat).
In this town is located the famous Abbey of Pion, one of the most romantic architectural monuments of Lombardy and one of the most beautiful monasteries in northern Italy. The abbey church was built in the 11th century, but was rebuilt several times in the following centuries. The covered gallery with lancet arches dates from the 13th century, the bell tower from the 18th century.
Other places of interest in Colico include the Montecchio and Fuentes forts. The first, Fort Montecchio, is the only fort in Italy left from the First World War. It was built in 1911-1914 to control the city streets of Spulga, Maloha and Stelvio in case the so-called Central Powers (German Empire, Austro-Hungarian Empire, Ottoman Empire and the Bulgarian Kingdom) decided to break the neutrality of Switzerland and invade the territory of northern Italy. True, it turned out that the fort was never involved in hostilities, even during World War II.
It was later used as an arms depot. Today, visitors to Fort Montecchio can see its main attraction - the armament, consisting of four cannons.
