Webcam Gai. Pobedy Avenue, Orskaya Street (Orenburg region).
Gai is a city in Russia, the administrative center of Gai district of the Orenburg region. Population - 38.3 thousand people (as of the end of 2011). The city is located in the Southern Urals, 26 km from the Iriklinskoe Reservoir (on the Ural River), 234.21 km from Orenburg.
There is a version of the origin of the name of the village from the Ukrainian (Belarusian) word "gai" - grove. In support of this version cite the mention of the old-timers that at the site of the village was a birch grove, or link this with the fact that, supposedly, the builders who came from all over the country wanted to make a woodless steppe in their city was a green oasis.
This beautiful position, however, does not stand up to criticism. So in the eastern Orenburg region is quite a lot of birch groves, and the first settlers from Belarus and Ukraine settled in these places back in the XVIII century, but did not name any settlement, not a single location after a grove. More thoroughly seems the version of the origin of the name Gaya from the name and surname of the hero of the Civil War G.D.Gaya, who took part in the suppression of the revolt of Orenburg Cossacks, General Dutov. Repressed in 1937, he was rehabilitated shortly before the settlement was founded.
After his rehabilitation (posthumous), a large number of works on the life of G.D.Gai were published in the party. It was on this wave of rehabilitation one of the streets in the center of Orenburg was also named after G.D.Gai.
