Arinyar Anna Zoological Park (AAZP for short), also known as Vandalur Zoo, is a zoological garden located in Vandalur, in southwestern Chennai, Tamil Nadu, about 31 km from downtown Chennai and 15 km from Chennai Airport.
Founded in 1855, it is the first public zoo in India. It is affiliated with the Central Zoo Board of India. Spread over an area of 602 hectares including a 92.45 hectare rescue and rehabilitation center, the park is the largest zoological park in India.
The zoo is home to 2,553 species of flora and fauna in an area of 512 hectares. As of 2012, the park has about 1,500 wild species, including 46 endangered species, in 160 aviaries. As of 2010, the park had about 47 mammal species, 63 bird species, 31 reptile species, 5 amphibian species, 28 fish species, and 10 insect species. The park, meant to be a repository for the state's fauna, is considered the second wildlife sanctuary in Tamil Nadu after Mudumalai National Park.
