Kirillov is a small town in the Vologda region, located 129 kilometers northwest of Vologda.

In 1397, a settlement was founded on the site of the modern city, which grew near the Kirillo-Belozersky monastery.
In 1776 the settlement was given the status of a district town and named Kirillov (in honor of the monk Kirill from Moscow).

In the late 18th century the town had over 300 dwellings, a wooden inn, three blacksmiths, four mills, four drinking houses, three salt works, and two wine stores.
By 1897 the population of the town had grown to 4306 inhabitants who lived in 746 houses.
In 1924 the Kirillo-Belozersky monastery was closed, and in its place was created a historical-architectural and art museum-reserve.

Since 1927 till 1937 the town of Kirillov was a district center of the Leningrad region, and after 1937 it became part of the Vologda region.
In 1997, part of the museum-reserve was leased free of charge to the Russian Orthodox Church.
